Response to NEA-NM May 27th Letter to the Board of Education
ESPAÑOLA, NM – On May 27, 2025, the Española Public School Board of Education (“Board”) received an email from Mr. Edward Webster with the National Education Association (“NEA”). Mr. Webster’s email mentioned a Prohibited Practices Complaint (“PPC”) filed by the NEA against the District in May 2025 among several other allegations of wrongdoing by the District.
In response to Mr. Edwards’ email, the Board will continue to cooperate with the Public Employee Bargaining Act (“PEBA”), including its processes and procedures around PPC filings. The District denies any allegations for violations of our Collective Bargaining Act with NEA-NM or PEBA. We value the District’s relationship with the local union and support the processes that have been bargained for between the two. We remain committed to resolving this issue amicably.
The PPC filing mentioned by Mr. Edwards references concerns the Board previously addressed on May 1, 2025, involving allegations that students were being asked for information regarding their immigration status. Since receipt of these concerns, the District has taken steps to appropriately resolve this matter. Although the District cannot comment on specific student or personnel matters, the Board would like to acknowledge Superintendent Spencer’s immediate response to these concerns and continued efforts to resolve them and prevent their reoccurrence.
The District is aware of the sensitivity around student information and appreciates the concern shown toward our students from all sides. The Board is committed to ensuring students are supported with career-readiness programs and creating opportunities to benefit all students.
