EPS Literacy Plan
Structured Literacy in Española Public Schools
At the start of the 2020–2021 school year, the New Mexico Public Education Department launched a statewide literacy initiative: Structured Literacy New Mexico. This initiative is designed to identify struggling readers early—before they fall behind—and to empower educators through professional development grounded in the Science of Reading and Structured Literacy.
The goal is clear:
To increase the number of students reaching reading proficiency, while reducing the number needing special education services due to reading difficulties.
What is Structured Literacy?
Structured Literacy is an evidence-based approach to teaching reading and writing. It combines well-established instructional methods with insights from brain science, showing how people learn to read. This approach is explicit, systematic, and multi-sensory—engaging sight, sound, and movement to support learning.
Research confirms that Structured Literacy benefits all students, and is especially effective for those with learning disabilities such as dyslexia.
Our Commitment
