Española Public Schools is committed to providing
high quality instructional, curricular and assessment programs for Española’s
students. EPS curriculum is aligned
with the Common Core State Standards. The Common Core Standards were forged as a promise for
consistent, shared and rigorous education standards for all students.
Language Arts, History/Social Studies, Science and Technical
Subjects
Compared to previous state
language arts standards that were quite wordy, the Common Core focuses more
succinctly on what is most essential but not on all that can be taught. The standards establish guidelines for English
Language Arts (ELA) as well as for literacy in history/social studies, science,
and technical subjects. Because students must learn to read, write, speak,
listen, and use language effectively in a variety of content areas, the
standards promote the literacy skills and concepts required for college and
career readiness in multiple disciplines.
The College and Career
Readiness Anchor Standards form the backbone of the ELA/literacy standards by
articulating core knowledge and skills, while grade-specific standards provide
additional specificity. Beginning in grade 6, the literacy standards allow
teachers of ELA, history/social studies, science, and technical subjects to use
their content area expertise to help students meet the particular challenges of
reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language in their respective fields.
Mathematics
The math Standards
are broken down into two separate practices; those dedicated to creating
students that are avid and participatory practitioners of math, and then those
content standards used to guide the teacher in developing student fluency in
procedural and content understanding. Where these two different styles of
standards intersect is in the goal to improve the overall achievement in math
instruction.
