Alcalde Elementary Teacher Megan Rael Honored with NMSBA Excellence in Student Achievement Award

Española, NM — Española Public Schools is proud to announce that Megan Rael, a first-grade teacher at Alcalde Elementary, has been nominated by the Española Board of Education and is the recipient of the New Mexico School Boards Association (NMSBA) Excellence in Student Achievement Award. This prestigious award recognizes Ms. Rael for her outstanding accomplishments in promoting student academic growth, as evidenced by remarkable progress on Istation assessments from the beginning to the middle of the academic year.

Currently in her second year as a Level 1 licensed teacher, Ms. Rael has already distinguished herself as an exceptional educator whose passion for teaching and dedication to her students are truly inspiring. Her classroom exemplifies the powerful results of intentional instruction, data-informed practice, and a deep commitment to the academic and social-emotional success of every child.

"While her Level 1 status might suggest that she is early in her career, Ms. Rael embodies the qualities of an exemplary educator," shared her principal, Ms. Michelle R. Martinez. "She is deeply committed to continuous growth and development, and her passion for teaching is evident in every aspect of her work."

Ms. Rael is not only focused on her students’ growth—she is also actively pursuing professional development. She is preparing to begin her Master’s degree and is working diligently to complete micro-credentials for Level 2 licensure. This year, she also took on the role of mentor for an Education Fellow, demonstrating her leadership and unwavering commitment to supporting other educators.

Her instructional approach is enriched by the knowledge and strategies she has gained from trainings in AVID, Conscious Discipline, UNM collaboration efforts, and Structured Literacy. She consistently applies this learning to refine her practice and ensure a strong educational foundation for her students.

"I am not at all surprised that Ms. Rael is the recipient of this well-deserved NMSBA award," her principal added. "Her hard work, dedication, and passion for teaching are truly remarkable. Her classroom is a reflection of the effort, time, and heart she pours into her students' success every day."

The school community joins together in celebrating this achievement and recognizing the positive impact Ms. Rael has made at Alcalde Elementary and within the Española Public Schools. Congratulations, Ms. Rael! You make us all so proud!
